Description

This off-campus course is open to students to attend a state-approved school of beauty culture. The professional school will provide the facility, instruction, and clinical training as prescribed by the Illinois Department of Registration and Education. There is a student fee for this course, which varies and is subject to change. Students provide their own transportation. Registration needs to be done by first year students in early January at the beauty school.

Philosophy

We contract with modern, well-equipped cosmetology schools that specialize in teaching the art and science of hairstyling.  Students will develop their skills, meet licensing requirements, and hone their communications skills.

Prepare students for the State Licensing Exam
Develop interpersonal skills
Link Academic and Technical Skills
Expose students to a variety of career options
Complete the curriculum requirements as determined by the Illinois Department of Public Health

Basic Training        150 hours
Hair Styling and Hair Dressing    475 hours
Chemical Applications and Hair Treatments    500 hours
Sanitation and Shop Management    200 hours
Esthetics        85 hours
Nail Tech    55 hours
Electives    35 hours

Total 1500 per State of Illinois licensing requirements.

A student who is considering enrolling in the Cosmetology program at the Wilco Area Career Center should have:
 

Knowledge and Skills in these Academic areas:

Mathematics

  • add, subtract, multiply, & divide positive and negative numbers, fractions, and decimals
  • calculate ratios, proportions and rates

Reading

  • read and comprehend at technical level
  • can determine cause and effect relationships
  • understand multiple step instructions
  • decode words

Writing

  • focus on the clear communication of content

Science

  • understanding chemical components
  • introduction to human anatomy in relation to hair, nails, muscles, etc..

Skills and Abilities in:

Reasoning and Problem Solving

  • think of new ideas and creative ways to solve problems

  • notice when something is wrong or likely to go wrong
  • judge costs and benefits of a possible action
  • combine several pieces of information and draw conclusions
