A tree sits at the top of a hill at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, posted with signs, which include “Pride,” “Attitude,” “Respect,” “Loyalty,” “Hurt,” “Agony,” “and “Pain.” These signs were put there by former students, and some have been there for decades. They have inspired thousands of law enforcement officers and agents who struggled up that hill during class runs. The tree has become an icon to thousands of police officers and agents who have attended training at the FBI Academy and the FBI National Academy (https://leb.fbi.gov/spotlights/leadership-spotlight-creating-extraordinary-moments).

In 2018, Instructor Michelle Gunter introduced the idea for Wilco Criminal Justice students to model the FBI Academy.  As such, students were asked to select one word to leave behind as a legacy for future students.  The word they selected was "Family".

On Tuesday, May 15, 2018 the students posted their word on the grounds of Wilco during a brief ceremony.  The following statement was read:

Family

The word that best describes Wilco Criminal Justice Class 2017-2018 is "Family" because that's what we have become.  It is our legacy - left behind for others to strive for.

We have gotten attached to everyone.  We care for each other a lot.  We are friends outside of school as well as with our instructors.  We've grown with each other and have made each other better.

When we come into class, there is a family vibe.  We get along like a family.  When problems arise we work through them and fix them.

We work together as squads and as a class almost everyday.  We work when we have to but we know how to have a good time as well.  Even on days that school drags, we love Wilco - it's the place we want to be.

Wilco has been a great experience for us and we don't regret joining the program.
