Computer Technology

Course Description

Computing Essentials 

This 1-year course provides hands-on instruction in theory and practice in the areas of setup, maintenance, software and hardware installation, troubleshooting, circuitry, system configuration, and repair of personal computers. Advanced students will receive instruction on installing and servicing a network, repairing/replacing faulty mechanical and electronic parts. Students will have the opportunity to learn the prerequisite skills necessary to become A+ certified. A+ is an industry standard designation for competency. Students in this course are dual enrolled with JJC: CIS122.

Data Communications and Networking

This 1-year course provides hands-on instruction in theory and practice in the areas of setup, maintenance, software and hardware installation, troubleshooting, circuitry, system configuration, and repair of personal computers. Advanced students will receive instruction on installing and servicing a network, repairing/replacing faulty mechanical and electronic parts. Students in this course are dual enrolled with JJC: CIS145.

 

A+ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC

This 1-year course provides hands-on instruction in theory and practice in the areas of setup, maintenance, software and hardware installation, troubleshooting, circuitry, system configuration, and repair of personal computers. Advanced students will receive instruction on installing and servicing a network, repairing/replacing faulty mechanical and electronic parts. Students will have the opportunity to learn the prerequisite skills necessary to become A+ certified. A+ is an industry standard designation for competency. Students in this course are dual enrolled with JJC: CIS275.

 Philosophy

Provide an environment conducive to learning. Set expectations of achievement. Require student performance and growth. Encourage the development of learning skills and academic excellence. 

Goals

Upon conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify all parts of a PC
  • Discuss the functions and interactions of all PC subsystems
  • Identify and troubleshoot common PC hardware problems
  • Select quality PCs and constituent components based on performance and cost
  • Install, replace, and upgrade PC hardware components
  • Install and troubleshoot PC peripherals such as printers and modems
