Business Logistics Community Service Project

Food items

The Wilco Business Logistics class through the leadership of Instructor, Mrs. Zitzke recently completed a Community Service Project which ran from 11/16-12/7/2020.  Students participated in all facets of the project, from creating fliers (in both English and Spanish) to delivering items to local community centers.  It was a great success!

General categories of items collected included; gently used coats/clothes, shelf stable foods, paper products, toiletry items, new hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and school supplies.

Our project was created to build student awareness of community (a group of people with diverse characteristics who are linked by social ties, share common perspectives, and engage in joint action in geographical locations or settings), service, and an exercise in project management.  Our class represents students from Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Lemont, Wilmington and all Plainfield High Schools.

Each student participated in a way that they felt most comfortable.  There were several options.  Some students; created fliers, used social media to spread the word, others collected and/or dropped off donations, delivered items to the community centers, wrote background information on local needs, came in to the Wilco Center to help sort and organize items, decided which community center was best suited to receive the various donation types, made phone calls to various centers to understand the most needed items in each facility, and some donated items.

Students also compiled special gallon size bags, especially for displaced individuals, that included a variety of mini deodorant, sewing kit, shaving kit, comb, toothbrush, toothpaste and brush holder, mini shampoo, lotion, soap, new socks, hat, gloves, a reusable cup with a package of hot cocoa inside, mini package of emery board file, Q-tips, cotton balls, bandaids, wash cloth, package of wipes, and more.

Heart Haven (youth) Outreach in Bolingbrook, Morning Star Mission, The Spanish Center and The Salvation Army were the major recipients.

A special thanks to our Wilco staff, community members, as well as, all our Business Logistics students.
